Rinoshun is a filmmaker who grew up in Gudular, a town at the junction of the three Southern States of India. He moved to Bangalore for his college and still works there. Rinoshun has experience working in over 30 short films in various roles. He started his Indie filmmaking career with his unreleased first film "Recur". "Butterflies have died" was his debut feature release which can be seen on YouTube. He has also released a poetry book with the same name. He made this film alone while being stuck in a flat amidst the Covid lockdown. "Five First Dates" is Rinoshun's first Malayalam venture made on a very modest budget. He is currently working on the post-production work of his Tamil film "Iranthakaalam."
I wanted to make a film with my Malayalam-speaking friends and that is how 'Five First Dates' happened. There wasn't an idea at first but rather just wanted to experience the joy of making a film with these people again. For a long time, I've also had the idea of wanting to make a film in line of Richard Linklater, where not a lot happens but people just speak and exist in their worlds, very simple yet very profound. So, then I put both of them together and that is how the film happens.
Me and my co-producer Nidhin discussed and locked in a very modest budget for the film and we started it in hopes that we would be able to finish this I'm glad that we were able to. Everyone associated with this film did a fabulous job, of understanding the limitations we had.
The film was shot mostly on mobile phones with the exception of some portions which were shot on Sony cameras. We made this decision because we had a lot of outdoor shoots and shooting with mobile phones gets less attention.
I believe that a filmmaker should stay true to the idea in their head and that is what I've tried to do with Five First Dates. It's a socio-political commentary underlined as a coming-of-age, romantic film.
After making the film during the nights after our office time and then going back to the office sleepless only to repeat it all over again, it was so grueling yet so much fun. When the filming was over all my team asked me was when are we going to do this again. I couldn't have done it without them and their support.
