Writer Statement

Until my early 20s I'd always believed nothing so significant had occurred in my life that could warrant permanence as a tattoo on my body. In 2019 I moved to Toronto to pursue screenwriting. This meant I was away from home when the pandemic shook the ground beneath us all in 2020. I was 29.

The only beings I had for company, in this isolating time, in a foreign land, were the plants I was learning to grow and nurture. A few months later when businesses dared to up and run again, I found myself making an appointment with a tattoo artist to eternalise the spider plant in my room on my forearm.

This experience changed my perspective on many things - tattoos, bodies, even the idea of permanence. It made me view my body like a canvas for art and expression. It made me take tattoos less seriously, to allow them to exist without meaning. And mainly it made me wonder what backstories everybody else was carrying on their skin.

In a country like India, where tattoos are still considered rebellious or unserious, I want to talk about the roles tattoos play in the emotional and physical lives of so many people. How they can stand for something, stand for nothing, hold a memory, finish a feeling, be a lesson or anchor us.

With Fine Lines, I want to explore the funny, romantic, pitiful, nostalgic, exciting backstories of tattoos which can give us a unique glimpse into the private lives of people.
