Director Biography - Todd Ford

My experience started in Michigan, coming into this world as an African American with all the nuances, contradictions, beauty, suffering, and triumph that belong to that community. When I was four my family moved to Africa and stayed for 7 years, and my perspective exploded. In 1989, I graduated with a BA in Traditional Modern Dance and soon after moved to Berlin, Germany. I lived there for 30 years. In 2012, I graduated from Cimdata as a video producer, certified by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce. In 2015, I was called back to the USA to care for my ailing parents. I am currently, still in DC, working towards a master’s degree in New Media Photojournalism at Corcoran School of Art, George Washington University.

Director Statement

I am interested in Illuminating the diversity and beautiful colors of communities. I am a documentarian but beyond that, I am an artistic being. I thrive to see the poetic movement of light and beings. Dancing light and shadows continually inspire me. I am an African American and grew up feeling cast aside at times. To counter that idea and feeling, I encourage and push for my balance, a balance between being pushed down and building myself up. In the realm of visual media, this balance comes through portraying people like myself in a flattering light; capturing and portraying marginalized people in a beautiful light. Focusing my positive attention on these people brings energy and light to their stories, and mine. It encourages society to see their beauty.
