Lauren (she/they) graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Haverford College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She majored in environmental studies and has been practicing as a student filmmaker throughout high school, undergrad, and beyond. She now lives on the traditional lands of the Aak'w Kwáan (bordering T`aaku Kwáan) in Juneau, Alaska. This film was created in association with a course titled Feminist Filmmaking Studio with Professor Emily Hong at Haverford College. She would like to thank her peers and close friends for their support throughout the creation of this film and dive into her own search for identity.
Finding She reveals the challenges of a queer woman emerging out of an adolescence of societal pressures that forced her into heteronormative isolation. Through a conversation with my dear friend, Belle Rajewski-Samko, I search for confidence in my queer identity while bumping into the challenges of defining femininity. We learn together that the only way to achieve true self-love is by finding autonomy from patriarchal structures and embracing every aspect of queer presentation. This film demands an emotional journey from the audience that is a reflection of how overwhelming my own search for identity was. Further, by incorporating feminist filmmaking techniques, I include Belle as a friend and a co-author that supports and advances this story along beside me. By integrating experimental audio-visual techniques, you will be welcomed into a distortion of the classic Hollywood female subject.
