I am an emerging CALD filmmaker based in Melbourne. I wrote and directed my first short film in 2017 which was awarded first prize at RMIT Film Festival. I was awarded an Associate Membership to the Australian Director’s Guild in 2017. I've been making films ever since :)
Finding Light aims to capture the fear and paranoia of being home alone at night. I think we've all experienced this fear at some point in our lives. When our family members are away, we find ourselves alone in the darkness of our home, suddenly we can hear every creak or bump in the middle of the night. Being afraid of the dark is something that's in built into our DNA - its a universal fear that all humans experience. At the same time, wherever there's darkness, the presence of light has put has always put us at ease. As a child I always slept with a night light on. I wanted to play with the trope of light being a beacon of safety and subvert this expectation. In this film, light plays the opposite role. I thought it would be interesting to see how the audience reacts to this subversion of a common horror trope. While the themes of paranoia and the fear of the unknown were intentional from the outset, the underlying theme of Finding Light came to fruition in the editing process ~
While the darkness can be terrifying, it is often our own fears and paranoia that lead to our downfall.
