Filling The Gaps

A documentary about imagination and documentary.
Filling the gaps is a film about the way we construct and understand documentaries. It illustrates how we use our imagination to connect facts, ideas and thoughts to put together and interpret documentaries often making convenient substitutions. It invites to a reflection about mediated representation of real events. Filling the Gaps explores the subject in a lateral way, suggesting rather than telling, encouraging exploration at the root of issues like truthful representation, fake news, cultural appropriation and other widely discussed themes of our days.

Director Statement

Media has made other’s ambitions and troubles nearly instantaneously available to all. We are more than ever aware of our world and its issues yet in the race for our attention, now a commodity worth millions, the messages are often tainted with hyperbole.
My films don’t want to compete in that race. They are small and deal with everyday issues. Formally, rather than tell or denounce intend on suggesting. This may put my films in disadvantage as they don’t try to urgently appeal but merely to encourage reflect. Or maybe I’m just not very good making them. Just in case, I try to make everyone better than the last one.
Working in advertising gave me a sense on how people forge their beliefs. I maintain that is nearly impossible to convince anyone of anything, they have to convince themselves. They often do this by looking around and sensing what others entertain and countenance. We live in the age of the like, the retweet and the viral. The immense amount of voices crowding the media also hide that smaller voices have it as tough as they've always had. Yet I still want to advocate for them and I hope mine and those of the people I record find and keep a place somewhere.
