Female Pioneers in Ethnographic Film
In 2001 a conference called "Memories of the Origins of Visual Anthropology - Putting the Past together" took place in Göttingen, Germany.
The video recordings of “Female Pioneers in Ethnographic Films” were made spontaneously by a group of young visual anthropologists. They criticised the organisers for not paying enough attention to the contributions of women in the field of ethnographic film and visual anthropology in the sixties and seventies.
Therefore, they interviewed spontaneously Patsy Asch, Sarah Elder, Jean Lydall and Judith MacDougall about their role in the history of ethnographic film.
This film is a source edition, which means that the complete conversation can be seen. It gives an interesting insight into the situation of the women, most of whom could not devote themselves completely to film work and yet played a central role in it.
