Director Statement

I wrote this story to ultimately cover the topic of checking in with street and gang members to move around safely in a certain area. This has become a traditional reality in the black community where it not only affects people that are deeply rooted in the streets but also affects black people who are just passing through. The other topic I wanted to speak on was the excess violence that occurs in the black community. One of my best friend’s friend died from an altercation where they were fighting over a gun. And just recently, the death of takeoff spurred even more emotion to write due to how untimely his death was. And while these topics don't fully relate to the concept of checking in, it still sheds light on the regressive nature of my culture.
