Experiencing Interruptions?

Faz Sol Lá Sim (Yes there is sun)

More than 100 years ago, in the historic city of Marechal Deodoro, Alagoas, the city's first philharmonic band, Santa Cecilia. Shortly after, Carlos Gomes was born. Today, there are five philharmonic, hundreds of active musicians and a tradition that goes from generation to generation, making the municipality a "barn of stars" for varied musical groups and military bands of the whole country. As they also function as schools, the bands guarantee constant renewal, reaching the 21st century with the same freshness and enthusiasm of the time of its foundations. The documentary film Faz Sol Lá Sim tells this story, showing who its protagonists are, from the legendary Nelson da Rabeca to Cicero do Pife, to the new talent that comes every day, such as the clarinetist Elizaubo Wanderberguer and the trombonist Graziele Conceição. Commanded predominantly by retired military, the bands maintains a rigid discipline, not allowing extravagant haircuts, uniforms out of standard, tattoos. Young people resist, but end up accepting the rules, because they know that belonging to one of the philarmonicas of the municipality is almost certain to establish a stable professional career; after tendering, many young musicians are absorbed by the many military bands scattered throughout Brazil. When they retire, they return to Marechal Deodoro, take command of the philharmonic, and thus, the virtuous cycle repeats itself. The teachers and principals work as volunteers, maintaining the constant development of the associations, despite the small amount of money available to each one of them. The teaching method works: in about a year of learning, students are already able to play with the band. But not all follow a career. Women, who soon get married and become pregnant, hardly become professionals. The film goes beyond music, addressing the condition of life of that community, whose grandparents raise the grandchildren and where children and young people adopt as parents the teachers of philharmonic.
