How do we imagine the lives of the previous generation of LGBTQ+ community? Particularly during the authoritarian era in Taiwan before martial law was lifted, how did the hidden desires and emotions of queer individuals come to be? "Father's Video Tapes" explores the unspoken desires between a father and son, which becomes an unspoken understanding, opening up a series of inquiries into the father's gender identity and even the exploration and understanding of the previous generation of LGBTQ+ people. In this context, free from the constraints of politically correct labels, taboos, sexuality, politics, and identity intertwine deeply, creating a dizzying and bewildering atmosphere. Father’s Video Tapes is without a doubt the revelation of Yang’s personal history and family story. However, it also chronicles Taiwan’s social movements advocating LGBTQ+ people in the past three decades.
