Fathallah Tv, 10 years and a revolution later

Five destinies of young people, a district, a decade, embark us on a journey made of going and return between to eras: 2007-2019, from dictatorship to democracy. In all sincerity, these young people share their dreams and give us a disputing look on their country, Tunisia. Following the course of three musicians as well as her own artistic carrer, the Director highlights the creative process and the impact it may have on everyone's life. Through its music, the movie is a "voice" of a whole generation.

Director Statement

Everything has changed, yet nothing moves! That could be the summary of this decade. It all started in 2007 with my meeting with Halim, a 23-year-old musician. I filmed Halim at the Tunis Airport the day the police stopped him from taking a plane to Algiers. Why Algeria? In view to look for more music, to try to live off his art! When I ask him why he cannot live off his music in Tunisia, he calls me "and you, are you able to subsist from cinema?" This prompted me to try to better understand Halim's wrath, as well as the anger existing inside all the young Tunisians of this generation. In 2007, I was able to meet these young people and their neighborhood. I was able to grasp this grunt that was born after 20 years of "reign" of Ben Ali. My characters dreamed of freedom of expression, of work and dignity. In the midst of a dictatorship, they did not hesitate to hold a political speech criticizing the real situation of the time and dreaming their country. I followed five characters; all are unemployed. They all manage to live. Tiga, Paza and Halim, whom have the chance to cling to a dream: to become a professional musician. Since 2007, they already compose, write and play a protest and censored music. They are all coming from the same neighborhood: ‘Fathallah’, with its alleys, its houses made of very old stones, this village atmosphere where it almost makes good living. Those alleys allow us in 2007 to walk away from foreign glances. At the turn of an alley, we enter a new era: 10 years and a revolution later. A decade has passed. What happened to our young people, what about their dreams and their neighborhood?
A decade later, I am forced to observe, that this encounter, this film and the path he took, all this has made of myself one of the characters of the movie. With sincerity and modesty, I come in punctually in the film. The question related to the artist's evolution, the influence that his art may have on his life and his choices is clearly posed, through my character (my person) and through the musicians' life.
