João Nuno Brochado was born in Porto, Portugal and is currently living in Macao, where he is the coordinator of Cinema programmes at USJ's Faculty of Arts and Humanities. He has been working as a filmmaker since 2001, and started production companies in Portugal and in Macao. His most successful film, "A Man Sized Mountain" was nº1 sales in Portugal for 6 weeks.
Macao is a city known for casinos, entertainment and its busy life, and so many film productions focus on these aspects of the city. But Macau is also a quiet city, where its inhabitants enjoy a good quality of life, slow-paced, peaceful and relaxed. Among the streets and patios of Macao, we see children playing, women chatting ,dancing, practising Tai-Chi and men playing Mahjong with friends. It is the city where turtles still roam. This film focuses on this aspect of Macao.
Besides that, Macao is also a place of encounter between the western cultures, namely the Portuguese, and the Chinese cultures. As a Portuguese director living in Macao, this is an important aspect that will be present in the film, not only because the story portrays this encounter, but also visually and in the music.
It's also a story about the end of life - the wait for that day and the anxiety that old people experience of trying to get everything sorted out before they pass away.
