Director Statement

After reading Justin Conrad's script in one evening, I immediately knew I wanted to bring this story to life. Important changes were needed to the script, so we brought in screenwriter Christina Eliason for the rewrites. Originally the ending involved a suicide scene, which I disliked. I wanted a more meaningful ending with a sense of hope. The end changed completely and the story became more focused on the deteriorating relationship between the two main characters. I really liked the element of mystery and the strong, but toxic, friendship between two men. Although the setting is a small mid-western town, it was filmed in my hometown of Santa Barbara, where we found locations that had a convincing countryside feel. Todd M. Rowan did a great job scoring music that emphasized that "country living" feel without overdoing it. Most of the main actors are people I have worked with for my short films, and this is our first longer format film.
