Director Biography - Chris Yates

Chris Yates is a filmmaker from Springfield, Massachusetts. Always one to be involved in creative projects, Chris shifted from music to filmmaking after reading Robert Greene’s Mastery Book. The line in particular, “You will find your calling by thinking back to your childhood, reflecting on these early interests that you may have strayed from” was life changing. Reflecting back to his childhood, Chris remembered how much excitement he felt filming movies with friends using an old JVC camcorder. The very next day, he went out and bought a Nikon DSLR and began his new journey. Over the next few years he spent much time adding to his skill set including enrolling in videography courses at his local community college, taking acting classes at New Century Theatre of Northampton, MA and attending screenwriting seminars throughout New England. He continued to expand on his profession by creating visuals for music artists, producing promotional events for marketing, developed a comedic web series and worked on various film sets as a grip to gain experience. After years of self study and creating content, Chris set out to shoot his first short film. His goal is to be a distinctive voice in the industry with his unique film making style whilst working towards ultimately creating feature films. Moreover, he remains passionate about collaborating with other creatives to produce content audiences will love and enjoy.

Director Statement

One of my main goals for this film was to take black characters and place them in a surreal scenario. I often think about my contributions to the culture and ways to tell stories from a different perspective. My love for HipHop was an integral part in the writing of the screenplay. From the way the characters speak, down to the clothing. It’s an amalgamation of my personal interest, past and present.
