FOOTBALL FIELD ON THE CLOUDS
A Lu is a minority teenager of the Mong tribe who lives in a
small village called Ta Xua, on the ever-cloudy peak in
North Vietnam. He plays on an amateur football team as a
goalkeeper and enjoys playing at what they call a field,
which is just an open land at the edge of the mountain.
Most of the people in the village cultivate tea from an
ancient forest on the top of the mountain by Hmongʼs
traditional method.
It is just the same with A Lu. He and his family own a small
tea farm and take good care of it. And his dream is to make
enough money to buy his wife a washing machine
someday.
A Lu follows Kien, a man who left the city to start his new
life in this village. A Lu learns from Kien about the
preciousness of the humble and sustainable way of life at
the top of the mountain, in exchange he teaches him how
to cultivate tea in Hmongʼs way.
They focus on their work at the tea farm in the daytime and
enjoy playing football after they finish their work. However,
in the small village, tourists start to come for its beautiful
landscape and nature. And at the same time, the real estate
fever bubble is coming along too.
While then, another Hmong guy, Man, starts his challenge
to build an artificial football field with lights and a net to
surround the place. Their dream was to have a field where
they could enjoy football later in the darkness and play
safely. Man sold his land to earn the money to build the new
field. Nowadays it's becoming more popular for the
Hmongs to give up their lands, sell them to live a life in a
city style. A Lu has also been tempted and started thinking
of selling his land.
How can A Lu keep the Hmong tradition while he
increasingly wants to live the city lifestyle? And will Ta Xua
still can keep its true beauty when this urbanization comes?

I was born in 1 coastal city, which has a beautiful Halong
Bay natural heritage. My childhood was going to the
beach playing, painting, and bathing.
After years of schooling and working away, the coastal city
where I live has changed. On many sides, it has become
more beautiful but on the other hand, the sea has faded
away. The old beach is now a residential area. The
mountains used to be so far away, now I can walk to touch
them.
Urbanization is a Global Issue. Our prime minister has said:
"don't trade the environment for economic growth".
Correct. Yet cities change every day, and I witnessed it
when I came to Ta Xua highland, a mountainous
commune in the North of Vietnam located at an altitude of
2000m.
I have met and loved many Hmong people here, including
A-Lu, Man... I want to make a film about the change of this
land, I want people to see it so that this land can develop
better while preserving nature, keeping a pure life with
national identity; and the young, like A Lu's children, they
still grow up to see the clouds and the sky and mountains,
not the crowded city that can be found anywhere in the
developed countries.
