Director Biography - Junting Zhou

Junting Zhou was born in Guangzhou, China, and moved to New York City for the MA Media Studies program at The New School in 2015. After graduating, he has worked as a freelance cinematographer in New York while making his own short narrative and documentary projects. His cinematography on the short film "Agatha" has won numerous awards internationally. His short documentary of his family during the beginning of the pandemic was selected in Op-doc in "The New York Times" in 2020.

Director Statement

Junting Zhou is concerned with people’s inherent loneliness in the contemporary world, their struggles with identity, and the impact of history and current global political structures upon individuals. His body of work is informed by his experiences as an immigrant and a homosexual.

The short film Everything Will Be Okay is inspired by the night life in Bushwick. Bushwick has grew a community of LGBTQ+ and aritsts in recent years. With more and more nicely looking cafes, restaurants and night clubs emerge, gentrification grow as well. Everything Will Be Okay is about the realization of gentrification and reclaiming the public space for the community as well as exploring how the pandemics impact our feelings.
