Director Biography - Pavaret Udompatthanakit

I was born an only child and has been raised in Thailand. I’m a fourth-year student of Film Section from the School of Digital Media and Cinematic Arts, University of Bangkok. I’ve dedicated my times studying in Film Studies and Alternative Filmmaking major and Performing Arts minor. I have been interested in filming and performing arts since I was a high school student. I also had an opportunity of directing and acting on a stage play of my school. Besides, there were times that my friends and I had participated in many short films competitions. I’m always mesmerized just sitting and watching movies whether in a movie theater or just by my own self in my own room. And after years that I have studied more deeply about the filming arts, I came to understand that filming is a unique way of making arts by telling a story through an artist’s point of view.

Director Statement

This work of directing is a big step as I’m getting closer to my dream. And it is my honor to get to becoming a real film director for my own movie thesis. The first thing that every storyteller has to think of is what story we actually want to tell. And by thinking back to myself, I have found that anything that happens around us can be knitted up a work of art. It sounds easy, right? Anything could be told. But if you look more closer, you’ll find out that it’s not that simple, because the easiest could be the hardest at the same time. I was spending days and nights digging and running around my head until I finally saw the light at the end of the tunnel. I can finally reach out the deepest crux that this 21 year-old man desires to unveil.

As a child, my life was so simple and uninteresting at all. I was just an ordinary boy who was just thinking of becoming cool and different. It was my own myth, my own belief back then.

As the time had passed by, everything seemed to be clearer, and finally, you know it when you know it. Life happened, the politics, and my family, the problems that were tying up my hands was the answer to my question that I have to stand up and start helping people by telling truths. And this film is about the one of the most inhuman one. I have gotten this idea from the news about an abduction, or literally say, an enforced disappearance, of an political activist named Tar Wanchalerm in Cambodia. Personally, a suspicious missing of a person is really interesting. And without involving any political issues, I think that this topic is all about the humaneness and moral. Now, let me conclude you the story behind this work. I am neither an important nor famous person, I’m just a normal human being who couldn’t imagine what would it be or what would happen if I was the one who is missing, the one who nobody knows his plight.

I also have an existential crisis, a condition of unknowing the meaning of one’s own existence. Sometimes, I feel so small in this infinite universe, it’s like being alive or dead makes no difference. For me, the human life is like a planet that has to follow its own sun, like, being controlled by something more powerful. To clearly say, it’s not exactly a condition of being depressed, but it’s a state of questioning my own life.

Therefore, the problem which I was suffering had led to the suspicious disappearance of a political refugee named Tar Wanchalerm. No refugees want to be vanished nor treated as nullity, because they know their own meaning of life, they know that they are fighting for the greater good. They were born as givers and helpers, they were born to be shaping this society. The strong insistence of their purposes and their beliefs had taken control of my mind, just like a haunting voice in my head that has pushed me to stand out creating this film to help spreading their intentions and their realities, and to give the existence of mine a meaning as well.
