Director Statement

I was in a difficult place in my life after finishing my freshman year. While the general audience that saw my first film gave me positive reviews, I did not get the reviews from my professors that I expected. For a first- time filmmaker that is a scary situation to be in. When the sophomore year began we started making documentaries. Our first task was to film some sort of community and to show their world. I immediately thought of a boxing gym. I was always interested in boxing and I wanted to explore a mind of a modern warrior in hopes to see that mentality of a warrior that never gives up in hard times. Nikola, the fighter in the film, was kind enough to let us film his gym and his upcoming match. Nikola was fighting a way bigger guy than him, but he never showed sign of fear. He got knocked down in the final round and he got up right away and started fighting harder than before. I knew we had it. The film is about cruelty of the sport and the irony of the fighters that train together help each other to hit each other harder. But film ultimately is a metaphor for life itself. We all have be tough in life. And life such as boxing is a never ending battle and we just need to keep punching.
