Experiencing Interruptions?

Estuary Winds

A scratch and ink film exploring the character of the winds experienced on the Thames estuary, the imagery is based upon a variety of internal responses to the shifting winds, imagined or real felt in the background of the estuary. A way to add structure and work with the material as the scratching and inking progressed and emerged, the film was divided into four parts identified by "Colour Exchange", "Stormy Snow", "Flying Wind" and "Breezy Day".

The piano music was written and played by Susan Comegys in response to the four parts of the film. The composer watched the film several times, playing and experimenting with different melodies until each individual theme seemed to carry a particular melody harmoniously. When she felt that the melody carried the individual theme, it appeared as if they were dancing together in unison.

This work was made in Essex on the north bank of the Thames estuary. The makers live in Essex.
