Before the script was written I remember talking to Matt about various aspects of relationships and the idea that the more you love someone the more you are at risk of getting hurt when you eventually lose them, whether that be in a romantic relationship or just your relationship with family. It made me think about the people that I’ve lost in my family and the fear that I have going into relationships knowing that someday you’re going to lose that person. However there is always that question in the back of my mind of is it worth it? That’s what really drew me to this project, the idea that something has to make it worth it for us to put ourselves into a place where we might get hurt.
Additionally, this story is told through the perspective of a queer couple, but what I think is incredible about the story is that anyone can relate to it. Even watching two men on screen I still feel the weight of the story and I think that it’s so important that we show these experiences are universal no matter who you love. Of course I’ve seen many straight couples on screen before, so I was delighted to be a part of telling this beautiful story Matt wrote and honored to be the director.
