Shaun Hume was born in Australia, and is a writer and director. His debut feature film, Wakefulness (2018), has been described as "a pensive and meditative journey", delivering the first person account of a man coming to terms with a significant trauma. Shaun's second feature, En Masse (2022), is an experimental sci-fi drama about the impact of a wide reaching terror attack on two friends, and has been called a film which "makes you feel you are half remembering episodes before you were born, and half experiencing episodes after you have died."
En Masse has been constructed from little resources, and uses a non-traditional narrative structure. The film flows from thoughts to memories and actions, emotions and observations. It does so by setting in front of the audience, cinema images which are intended to communicate to them the purest form of the ideas confronted. En Masse seeks partly to encapsulate my frustrations with and interpretations of contemporary human behaviour.
The film was made for essentially no money and with no script or professional actors, through an exploration in creatively through constraints. The task was to see how many options could be created by working with what could be not so eloquently called a “poverty of means”.
