Experiencing Interruptions?

Emerald Wings

A city park is a space where people can reconnect with a miniature and humanly-made version of nature. In summer 2021, dancer Asuka Watanabe and writer Elodie Glerum regularly met in the same Amsterdam park, where they built a common pool of experiences. They engaged in a dynamic interaction between dance and poetry, with city nature at the core of their creative process. The dialogue between verbal and non-verbal modes created a flow of expressions, signified by poetry and dance movements, and ultimately condensed in a short film. Asuka and Elodie first created some movements together to tune in the concept to work on, based on which Elodie wrote a poem in French, a language Asuka does not speak. Asuka then created new movements, hinged on her impressions triggered by sounds and by the English translation. Eventually, Asuka wrote a poem in Japanese highlighting the sense of freedom achieved while meeting and dancing in the park. The English translation of both poems is available at the end of the film, for which Thomas Shaddock composed the soundtrack based on the visual elements as well as the poetic content.

Director Biography - Asuka Watanabe

Asuka Watanabe is from Japan and living in The Netherlands.
She studied at the Joffrey Ballet School and Steps on Broadway in the US. And then graduated from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, The Netherlands. She has danced for various projects with the choreographers such as Maurice Causey and Sagi Gross. She was also working as a dance teacher at Amsterdam University of the Arts, the dance company De Stilte, and Amsterdam Dance Centre in The Netherlands.
In 2018 she founded her own dance method “Asuka Method” with the concept of “create your own authentic happiness & freedom” which helps to develop the mind and body awareness while we are having fun and feeling natural. This is so that we all can come back to be grounded within our own universe.
In the last few years she was interested in creating and producing dance films to explore her own way of expression. She has got the chance to meet artists with different disciplines with whom she felt a connection with and then decided to create something nice together. This is how “Emerald Wings” was born.
