El Zapotazo. An Everlasting Carnaval.

El Zapotazo, the gathering point situated in the rowdy neighborhood of San Francisco in the city of Campeche, Mexico where groups of families, friends, and acquaintances come together to celebrate the festivities of Carnaval during the 1970s to 1980s. This is the name given to this documentary project that compiles the accounts and tales that make of the festivities of the oldest Carnaval in Mexico.

Director Biography - Andrés López Barrera

As a graduate of communications from the University of Interamerican of Development, his work has been multidisciplinary and collaborative. Starting in 2015, he’s worked on creating an audiovisual production company with his classmates from university to develop productions and short films. Some of these productions include “La Rama” (2016), “Leído” (2016), y “Ciclos La búsqueda de la inspiración” (2017), the latter winning an award in the Campeche Film Festival.
With the objective of continuing his education and career, he has taken different courses and workshops including Cinematic Narrative led by Juan Roberto Mora Catlett, Documentary Photography led by Gabriela Olmedo Macip, Cinematography with Sony Alpha led by Daniel Blanco AMC, and the documentary workshop “How to Make a Movie from Beginning to End” led by various members of the Society of Mexican Authors of Cinematographic Photography, amongst others.

He also has experience as a director of photography, assistant director, and director, as well as extensive experience in different digital and advertising agencies. As a documentalist, he’s been a collaborator and creative director of Ciudad del Ocio, the first page of photojournalism in the state. Presently, he is a creditor of the Program to Encourage Creation and Artistic Development (PECDA) through the Support System for Creation and Cultural Projects (SACPC) and works as director and screenwriter of the feature documentary film El Zapotazo (2022).

Director Statement

I want to dedicate my entire life to create something better for the world in a space that allow humans to maximize our potential and take us think outside the box, make our current time in civilization better and add somenting to the culture. I like to learn by making and educate myself taking constant information around me. My work has been by nature multidisciplinary, because I’m convenced that creativity is not delineated by a single major.
