El Cantina – That too is Rock 'n Roll

Photographer, visual artist and filmmaker Piek Kock made this film on her own. She films the men of the Tilburg band El Cantina in their process from rehearsal room to recording studio. The band, together for more than 15 years, only plays self-written punk rock songs. The age of the men is between 54 and 75 years. Within Tilburg and certain parts of Germany they have built up a considerable cult status. Besides the band El Cantina, the same men also form another band: De Familie Bungalowtent. Mostly Dutch songs, played acoustically, with a good dose of perspective and humour. The viewer gets to know the men as sweet, soft, insecure rockers. Ambitious in being unpretentious. Or is world fame beckoning there?
Piek and 3 of the 4 musicians went to primary school together in de beautiful village Berkel-Enschot in the south of Holland and later also in Tilburg.
It is very sad that one of the members of the band died in july 2023, half a year after the first screening of the film.

Director Statement

The periphery of everyday life. Just out of sight of the unsuspecting passerby. People who don't choose to be in the spotlight, but form an underlying layer that is at least as interesting. By showcasing the "barely visible" elements, I invite the viewer to take a closer look at things they may have previously overlooked or dismissed. By presenting these elements without an opinion, I encourage the audience to form their own interpretations and to engage with the work on a deeper level. This approach can lead to a more personal and meaningful connection between the viewer and the work, as well as a greater appreciation for the richness and complexity of the world around us.
