Eises Kälte - Frozen in Time

8cht, mein erster Film, war aus einer ungewöhnlichen Idee entstanden. Eigentlich wollten mein Freund und Kollege Klaus Uhlenbrock, der nebenbei gesagt auch der Drehbuchautor meiner beiden Filme ist, nur einen lokalen kleinen Film machen. Bis wir merkten das wir doch tatsächlich, ob wir wollten oder nicht, mit anderen größeren Produktionen verglichen wurden.
So standen wir also nun da mit unserem mickrigem Budget von "3000€" und wollten ernsthaft einen 90 Minütigen Kinofilm machen,
Nicht ganz einfach, aber wir haben ihn fertig bekommen und er ist letztlich gut anzusehen gewesen.
Aber wir wussten das wir das besser konnten. Somit war klar: Wir machen noch einen Film und lernen aus allen Fehlern die wir machten, um bei dem neuen Projekt direkt neue Fehler zu machen.
So ist das wenn man "Try and Error" bevorzugt. Aber es lehrt einen auf die ganz harte Tour was du machen kannst und doch lieber sein lassen solltest.
Also haben wir uns an den neuen Film Eises Kälte herangemacht. Das Budget war schon viel größer, aber immer noch nicht ausreichend für einen guten Feature Film mit den vielen Kostümen und Pferden. Ich meine.... Hallo, 20.000€ das ist nicht mal low Budget!
Aber das war uns egal! Wir wollte einen anspruchsvollen Mysterythriller machen. Mit historischen Kutschen und allem was die Story so brauchte. Viele virtuelle Häuser und zum Teil ganze Strassenzüge, mussten bei diesem Projekt im Computer entstehen, weil es so etwas in der Größe nirgends gab. An ein großes, selbst erbautes Filmset, war mit diesem Budget gar nicht zu denken. Aber wir mussten das irgendwie hinbekommen.
Also habe ich ein ganzes Jahr damit verbracht in "Cinema 4d" und "After Effects" den Ort komplett nachzubauen den wir brauchten. Wir haben uns dann ein großes Bluescreenstudio in einer alten kalten Halle eingerichtet, um die Darsteller vor dem Bluescreen zu filmen.
Ein erfahrenes VFX Spezialistenteam hätte das sicher extrem optimieren können. Aber ich bin zufrieden.
Unheimlich wichtig war mir das arbeiten mit den Darstellern. Das ist ja genau meine Welt! Das hat extrem Spaß gemacht.
Alles in allem war das eine spannende Zeit mit vielen Auf und ab's!
Aber die Leidenschaft für den Film ist nun vollkommen erwacht und ich weiß gar nicht warum ich nicht schon eher darauf gekommen bin, Filme zu produzieren. Mir sagte mal eine Bekannte die den Film Eises Kälte gesehen hat: Du machst so tolle Filme mit so einem minimalen Budget. Was du wohl produzierst, wenn deine künstlerische Freiheit etwas großzügigere Grenzen hätte?
Das nächste Projekt ist auf jeden Fall schon in der Planungsphase. Mal sehen was die Zukunft für uns noch so mit sich bringt. Wir machen definitiv weiter!

8cht, my first film, was the result of an unusual idea. Actually, my friend and colleague Klaus Uhlenbrock, who by the way is also the screenwriter of my two films, only wanted to make a small local film. Until we noticed that we were compared with other bigger productions, whether we wanted to or not.
So now we were standing there with our meagre budget of "3000€" and seriously wanted to make a 90 minute movie,
It wasn't easy, but we finished it and in the end it was good to look at.
But we knew we could do better. So it was clear that we would make another film and learn from all the mistakes we made in order to make new mistakes directly with the new project.
That's what happens when you prefer "Try and Error". But it teaches you the hard way what you can do and still should leave it alone.
So we started with the new movie "Eises Kälte". The budget was already much bigger, but still not enough for a good feature film with lots of costumes and horses. I mean.... Hello, 20.000€ this is not even low budget!
But we didn't care! We wanted to make a sophisticated mystery thriller. With historical carriages and everything the story needed. Many virtual houses and partly whole streets had to be created in the computer, because there was no such thing in the size anywhere. It was impossible to think of a large, self-built film set with this budget. But we had to manage it somehow.
So I spent a whole year in "Cinema 4d" and "After Effects" building the place we needed. We then set up a big bluescreen studio in an old cold hall, to film the actors in front of the bluescreen.
An experienced team of VFX specialists would have been able to optimize this extremely. But I am satisfied.
Working with the actors was incredibly important to me. This is exactly my world! That was extremely fun.
All in all it was an exciting time with lots of ups and downs!
But the passion for film has now completely awakened and I don't know why I hadn't thought about producing films before. I was once told by a friend who saw the film Eises Kälte: You make such great movies with such a minimal budget. What would you produce if your artistic freedom had more generous limits?
The next project is definitely already in the planning phase. Let's see what the future holds for us. We will definitely continue!
