Edakkal Rock Carvings, A Post-evolutionary Analysis

The Edakkal rock carvings are situated on Edakkal hill at the hill ranges of Wayanad in Kerala. The carvings are on two massive vertical rocks facing each other at the Edakkal hills. The rock carvings done by pre-historic people are analysed by applying post-evolutionary theories. Anthropomorphs, flora, fauna, geometric forms and ancient scripts are seen on the rock walls. The pictures on the wall are classified into three:

1) Animals and birds that humans depend for food for survival.
2) Genital images of male and female signifying sexuality and reproduction for the sustenance of the human race.
3) Wrapped human body and stretcher to carry human body for mortuary practises.

From this analysis, the following observations are made:
1) These images are expressions of anxieties about life between birth and death.

2) Edakkal is the primordial womb of Kerala culture 3) Religion, culture and art of Kerala originated from it.
