Echoes of Her

A seemingly charming but deeply disturbed serial killer kidnaps women who resemble “her,” the one who got away. Locking them away in a hidden, soundproof room within his apartment. Exposing them to weeks of psychological manipulation until something doesn’t align perfectly, and the voices within his mind remind him that he will never be good enough for “her.” His mind begins to spiral, and he starts to dissociate which ultimately leads to his victim’s death, completely unaware of the mess, until the dissociation lifts to find himself covered in blood. Each victim experiences complete darkness for days at a time, waking only to find that a single lamp hangs in the center of the room, startled to find a masked man lingering within the shadows, patiently studying his prey. His obsession with masks stems from the feeling of being ashamed and powerless against the woman who broke his heart. He withholds food, water and basic needs, slowly breadcrumbing incentives that force dependency. This dependency creates a bond, the feeling that this man is their only security. His small acts of kindness force his victims to develop an emotional attachment or even loyalty towards him. Their minds so debilitated that even when given the chance to escape, they refuse to run. He conditions his victims to accept their captivity as part of a twisted fantasy, he dresses them and grooms them in a mirror image of “her.” This pattern of the serial killer’s obsession is repeated in a never-ending cycle, until his mind snaps, killing his victim in the process. He will soon find out that his latest victim is different.

Writer Statement

As a first-time film artist, I’m still exploring the depth of my passion as well as testing the boundaries of my art. I once read that in order to discover true potential and beauty in what you do, you have to start by creating something real, taking the risk, not knowing if you will succeed or fail. Sensorial imagery has always been my primary focus; forcing my audience to see, hear and feel my message, while exploring the depth of my mind’s darker nature. My goal is to reach my audience on a deeper level, exposing our fragile existence, teetering on the delicate balance between light and dark, good and evil, while asking the bigger question, what really is good or evil? Do those concepts truly exist, and how often do people pull back the surface of our facades to expose the truth that lies beneath? What gives us the strength to fight our demons? I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, but I do believe that we all silently battle with demons in one way or another, and my goal when producing art will always be to teach others that they are never alone.
