Director Biography - Ifeanyi Ezieme

Ifeanyi Ezieme is a highly ambitious, Nigerian-American filmmaker hailing from Pasadena, CA. At age nine he discovered his father’s old cassette camcorder and it was love at first sight. Throughout his schooling, Ifeanyi traded traditional book reports to make short films & educational videos. This lead Ifeanyi to familiarize himself with filming and editing at a young age. He'd go on to shoot & edit many films throughout his high school career quickly earning the nickname: Young Spike.

When the time came to pursue higher education, Ifeanyi's holistic approach to film and education earned him a prestigious full-tuition leadership scholarship from the Posse Foundation, enabling him to attend Pepperdine University. From his freshman year onwards, Ifeanyi fearlessly submitted his films to various festivals, displaying his artistic vision to audiences worldwide. As a junior, he wrote and directed what he considers his first official short film titled "Focus," which left an indelible mark at Pepperdine by sweeping every award at its annual Reel Stories Film Festival in 2019—a remarkable achievement since the festival's inception 10 years prior. "Focus" also made notable appearances in numerous film festivals across the United States. During his undergraduate years, Ifeanyi helmed a total of eight films, showcasing his unique storytelling before graduating with a BA in Media Production in 2019.

Following his tenure at Pepperdine, Ifeanyi's relentless pursuit secured him admission into USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, where he pursued his MFA in Film & Television Production. As a George Lucas Scholar, he further honed his craft, immersing himself in the art and intricacies of boldly cultural filmmaking. Ifeanyi graduated from USC in 2023 solidifying all faith he’s developed for himself throughout his creative journey.

Director Statement

Although this story is a fantastical drama told through the lens of Nigerian characters, what I hoped to achieve with this film was to create something that could resonate with audiences everywhere. It doesn't matter if you aren't Nigerian, don't come from a musical background, or grew up with the absence of family. Ebezina is rooted in grief & loss - something we all at some point in our lives will inevitably experience. It is my hope that the universality of this story will inspire those to see the beauty in the worst pain.
