EFFECTED
Marc Deveault is a french Canadian special effects artist who prior to working on features like X-men, was an emergency response medic in the Canadian army for 20 years. Direct exposure to trauma in war uniquely equips Marc to recreate realistic gruesome effects for feature films but this skill comes at the expense of living with PTSD. Effected grants the audience an all access pass into the life of a man learning to manage his PTSD through art.

Kayla Flinn is a Halifax local renaissance woman who is often involved in a variety of projects as a documentary filmmaker, TV host and stunt actor. In the last three years Kayla has been working full time in the STUNTS world of the ACTRA union leaving just enough time for documentary film work she’s most passionate about.
My goal for EFFECTED was to accurately document one man's reality of living with PTSD. I am a TV host/Actor living with attempted suicide scars not easily hidden from camera and I have always been interested in showcasing the raw lived experience of people struggling with their mental health.
What originally began as a simple pro bono promotional video for a special effects shop in rural Nova Scotia took an emotional turn the more invested I became in Marc's story. I created EFFECTED partly to show the power of art therapy to a greater audience but my main goal was to help bust the stigma that discourages men from talking about their mental health. Majority of popular content I have seen on men with PTSD features someone who is far along in their healing journey. Marc however is very much a work in progress and still actively learning how to manage his symptoms.
