Duke

In this heartfelt video, we introduce Duke, a spirited black Labrador retriever who became a cherished member of our family at the tender age of 2-3 months. The narrative unfolds as we discover that Duke, despite his joyful and playful demeanor, is facing a challenging health condition—congenital bilateral hip dysplasia.

The video takes a deeper dive into Duke's condition as we visit the veterinarian to understand the gravity of his situation. Through a detailed examination of Duke's X-rays, viewers are given a clear visual understanding of the hip dysplasia affecting his pelvis and hips. Hip dysplasia is a result of polygenetic inheritance, shedding light on the complexity and hereditary nature of the condition.

We explore the medical options available for Duke, delving into the specifics of two surgical interventions: biosteotomy and triosteotomy.

In a decision marked by both hope and caution, we choose to postpone surgery for Duke. The video articulates our concerns about the immediate side effects and our hope to provide Duke with a quality life, free from the immediate risks of surgery. However, we also acknowledge the possibility that Duke may require a hip replacement in the future as a more definitive solution to his condition.

Through this video, viewers not only learn about the medical aspects of hip dysplasia but also witness the deep bond between Duke and our family. It's a story of love, resilience, and the difficult decisions pet owners face when navigating their furry companions' health challenges.

Director Statement

As a radiation oncologist, I confront life's fragilities daily, addressing the complexities of cancer with precision and care. This professional backdrop informs my personal life, where, as a father of five remarkable children, I strive to instill in them a balanced perspective on health, resilience, and empathy. "Duke" is more than a film; it's an intersection of my professional ethos and familial journey, encapsulating the lessons we share at home.

In "Duke," our family's story unfolds through the eyes of our beloved black Labrador, Duke, diagnosed with congenital hip dysplasia. This narrative is a conduit for broader reflections on health and well-being, juxtaposing Duke's condition with the grave realities of genetic diseases that predispose individuals to cancer. It's a tale that seeks to put the pains and challenges of life into perspective, illustrating that while Duke's condition is serious, it exists within a spectrum of human and animal adversity.

My children, all students in New York public schools, are central to Duke's world and this film. Their interactions with Duke, their participation in his care, and their reflections on his condition offer a glimpse into a nurturing environment where empathy, science, and the pursuit of knowledge converge. This documentary is a testament to their growth and the values we cherish as a family: understanding, responsibility, and the aspiration to contribute meaningfully to the world, perhaps one day in the realm of human disease research.
