Chandler Ryd is a writer and director from Colorado with a writing background in drama and comedy. His previous short film, "Into the Plains," premiered at Cinequest in 2019. He raised over $13,000 through Kickstarter and private investing to produce "Double Bondsmen", which he shot with Virginia-based production company Distant Moon Media. He currently lives in Michigan with his wife and son and works as a freelance director and editor.
There are three things I bring to every film: make it strange, make it specific, make it resonant.
Make it strange. Good stories need to be surprising. Real life is weird, so I don't settle for bland characters and plots. I find the strange even in the seemingly ordinary. Plus, weird people are funny.
Make it specific. All my best ideas come from observation. In fact, most of my best ideas are strange because they are in fact true. I carry these specifics into my films because the details about the world are just too interesting to ignore. Plus, details are funny.
Make it resonant. When you strike a glass with metal, the ring lingers in the air because of the shape of the glass and material it is made of--the form of the glass as well as the content. In my films, the form and the content provide the context for truth to strike and a sound to ring forth. Underneath every film, I string ideas and questions that echo if you listen carefully. Plus, the truth is funny.
