Director Statement

I think traditionally classic is the highest genre. It was the trophy for emperors and generals who won in many wars and bring many people to his knees. But the history is changing now. It is being used by common people. The contents recorded by the media are transferred to the screens of people in real time. When some contents are manufactured as a work and when the work is entered into the history of art, it becomes a part of memory. It is absolutely different from the things on everyday TV screen.
So I think “the most interesting part of art is the relation between art and time”. I always think about the creation and extinction of art. Some works are temporary and the other works are permanent. I believe the concept of permanence is one of media that an artist can use.
For example, you can make the granite sculpture of Egypt built 6,000 years ago look like one built just yesterday. Plastic bags could disappear tomorrow. But you can create a work with the plastic bags that can last for thousands years.
I produce and maintain a work with daring materials and abnormal ideas. I try to redefine experience constantly. I make efforts to produce a work that doesn’t exist only at this moment and disappear soon but that can exist after a long time and reflect art in our society.
After I became an artist, I studied the relation between art works and time constantly. I tried to make different series but that can still maintain the timeline of my works. It is like a performance that doesn’t finish just with one time performance but that can be continued with the next performance. I am building my own work style. I try to produce better work this year based on my experience.
I presented ‘Plastic innocent city’ that contains my personality and idea as the start of my series. I structured the flow of time using the colors of the expression of emotion change. They said the work show fresh structure and movement, clear visualization, unprecedented props, variety of colors and clear storytelling. They became the words that indicate this work and crimson lake. I was able to show works of artistic philosophy based on this work at ‘M Theater Artist Show’, ‘Incheon Dance Festival Invitation Performance’ and ‘Seoul Culture Foundation First Artist Support Project, Danyun Performance’. I pursue for the beauty of modern movement, artistic freshness, the relation between beautiful art and time and visualization of a story. I produce works with the spirits of test and daring.
