Don't Put Me In A Box
“Don’t Put Me in a Box” is an animation by Ollie Hartland that deconstructs the concept of gender.
Society expects everyone to fit into one of two categories and never deviate from them. This is not only harmful to everyone who doesn’t fit into the gender binary, but also those within it. It is wrong for anyone to be told who they should be.

Ollie Hartland (they/them) also known as Stegobean Studio, is an illustrator and animator from Wolverhampton, UK. They have just graduated from the University of Wolverhampton with a First in Illustration and have begun to pursue a career in the creative industries.
Their work ranges from silly zombies, to cute frogs, to serious topics, all while keeping a bright, bubbly aesthetic.
They are a huge advocate for people being their true selves and this is reflected in their work, with the most common topic being about trans and non-binary individuals.
I created my animation "Don't Put Me In A Box" to visualise and deconstruct the concept of gender and how it isn't as binary as society makes it out to be, and how it can be very harmful to those who don't fit into one of the two categories. In most media, trans and non-binary people have been dehumanised, so I felt like it was essential to show at the end that we are all human and deserve basic respect and equality to others.
