Director Biography - Guilherme Fernandes

Guilherme is a 19 year old, self taught cinematographer and editor from Lisboa, Portugal. His passion began at an early age, filming music videos for his older brother’s band. By age 14, Guilherme started doing freelance work as an editor and director for local businesses and friends. Within a few years he founded GAFF Visuals, a Portuguese production company committed to producing Web/TV content and promotional material for companies within the greater Lisboa metropolitan area. It was around this time in 2014 that Guilherme collaborated with Bobby Daniel Rodriguez and Diogo Martins in the making of the short film EXCUSE ME LISBON. This was his first foray into narrative story telling and was the catalyst for becoming part of the creative team for DOLORES. Other recent credits include M DE MUSICA, a Portuguese TV program about music, which he produced and directed for 3 seasons.

Director Statement

Making this movie was a collaborative process from start to finish. We wanted to give an audience a story that would stay with them not just because they laughed and cried but also because they saw a part of themselves on the screen, someone they recognized or someone they never understood.
DOLORES is a Spanish language adaptation of an original stageplay of the same name, written by Edward Allan Baker. The story follows two sisters, Sandra and Dolores, who navigate through a world where domestic violence is a normal part of life. The original takes place in Providence, Rhode Island. A blue collar city situated in the New England area of the Northeast United States. The narrative is rich with the cultural identity, grittiness and the language that reflects the citizens of Providence. This is why an adaptation from English to Spanish needed the same regional specificity to keep the story authentic and true to its universal themes.
VOZ co-founders Czarina Mada and Cristina Castro both hail from the Mexican states of Sonora and Sinaloa, respectively. Which is part of the reason this region was chosen for the adaptation. In the main characters they saw themselves, their neighbors, their friends and the strangers that all have too much in common with Sandra and Dolores. The Northern States of Mexico have a distinct cultural identity thats unique from its southern counterparts. The dialect, the food, the music, the landscape and its denizens are part of a culture thats rich with pride, love, but silent on the matters of domestic violence.
After recieving Mr. Baker’s blessing to create the adaptation, the journey began. We hope you enjoy the film as much as we enjoyed making it.
