Director Biography - Eliza Lutz

Eliza Lutz is a self-taught musician, artist, graphic designer, silk-screener, and promoter. Lutz’s passion for DIY in both art and music inspired her to build an independent record label & creative agency, Matron Records, that empowers musicians and artists by providing the education and resources they need to grow sustainable careers.

Lutz was raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she has been making art, recording music and touring nationally since she was 16. Uniting her love of both music and art, Lutz has focused much of her visual output illustrating album covers, show posters and band merchandise for local and national projects including her own bands Future Scars, GRYGRDNS, As In We and Scissor Lift. In 2019 Lutz decided to try her hand at filmmaking and wrote, filmed, directed and produced two music videos for her band Future Scars. Dog Star was made with friends on a $300 budget in the deserts of New Mexico and is her first film project. It is based on her personal experience of sexual assault.

Director Statement

To escape a great pain as it was inflicted upon me when I was young, I once stared so hard at the night sky that it swallowed me whole and transported me into a safe place in the future. In that moment I understood trauma as time travel and have since worked to capture this elusive expression of time and the echoes of a fractured self through my art and music.
