I knew about the film for the first time in the park of the countryside. When I was little, I grew up with my grandparents, and the park was a place of public entertainment and a socializing center. Once in a while, in the evening, someone would put up a projector to show popular films at that time, mostly depicting the fight against Japanese invasion, with a few exceptions with some traditional opera or cartoon films. I remember people, sitting or standing, watching the glowing screen and experiencing angry, sadness, anticipation, or happiness together.
Later I moved to the city to stay with my parents. But I felt more alone for my parent's marriage didn't work out, and they divorced when I was eight. During that time, films were my only companion. I would be fully immersed into this rich and fantastic world, amazed by the bizarre, exciting, or touching stories, getting to know the vividly strange, humorous, or sweet characters, and feeling their joy, regret, passion, or obsession. As if the world behind the screen is the real reality. In sharing their emotions, my loneliness disappeared. At the same time, I began to write my own short stories, where I could experience all kinds of different lives and wave my struggles into my characters.
At Sichuan Film and Television University, I know films as an industry in a more systematical and professional way. In the first year, I joined the school theater and helped take videos of events and the post-editing. After I learned the basics, I tried writing and shooting by myself. I also interned in the local TV station to assist the whole process of the children's program. I learned to write better scripts and improve my editing skills. To my excitement, the script I created entered the first round of selection for new film talents.
My works tend to center on the most ordinary people, who don't have special power, wealth, or good luck, but who have their special fire of life and emotional tension.
