Michael Bruce is the department chair of Journalism and Creative Media and a tenured associate professor at the University of Alabama. He also serves as the director of UA’s Digital Media Center, overseeing WVUA-TV and Alabama Public Radio.
He was recruited to Alabama in 2011 to help start an undergraduate concentration in sports media. In addition, he has taught graduate research method courses and has served on numerous committees including the undergraduate curriculum committee and the production committee. Prior to moving to Alabama, Bruce worked in the Division of Communication Arts at Oklahoma Baptist University for 13 years in a faculty/staff position.
Bruce is active as both a research and creative scholar. He, and colleague Chandra Clark have recently released their feature-length documentary project, Do Right: The Stallings Standard. His creative scholarship also includes various short-form video and television projects. An accomplished live television director, he has more than 200 sporting/live event credits. His research is centered on risk and crisis communication, with a particular emphasis on Arab media.
As a transplanted Sooner, I have always appreciated the tradition and pageantry associated with premiere college sports teams. Teaming up with Dr. Clark to help document the 2016 reunion of Coach Stallings’ teams was only natural. Back then it was hard to imagine that this work would result in a feature-length documentary about the Stallings legacy. However, the journey to tell the “Do Right” story resonates with my own convictions about faith, family, football and leaving the world a better place for all individuals.
