Writer Statement

My father left school when he was 12 years old in order
to support his family in Buga, Colombia. My father
recently turned 69 years old and has spent more than 45
years of his life working construction, stucco, and
various forms of intensive labor. I remember the days
after school when my father picked me up and took me to
job sites to show how hard he had to work to support our
family.
When I started acting out as a young petulant child my
father would often tell me age-inappropriate horror
stories of life in Colombia to scare me into doing what
he said. I was a picky-eater and lazy shit when I was a
kid so I got these sorts of talks all the time. These
stories didn’t mean much to me when I was a kid but as I
learned more about my father I began to see him in a
different light. He lived a life of great adversity and
hardship that I will never have to experience because of
what he did for me.
I want to bring this short script to life as a way to
honor my father and immortalize my respect for him in
film. I hope to be able to share this story with all of
you.
