Dis-Culture
Fergus (26) is a young filmmaker obsessed with a niche sport called ultimate frisbee since a young age. During his master's degree at the University of Sydney, he struck a deal with the Sydney University Ultimate Frisbee Association (SUUFA) on their adventure in this year's Bathurst Stampede. Fergus Chan is an emerging multicultural director and videographer who is in search of his true self from his own personal and familial experiences.
Born in Hong Kong but grew up in both Beijing and London, Fergus has deep influences from multiple cities and cultures. After graduating with his degree in Architecture, Fergus decided to take a huge leap of faith and enrolled himself on the Master of Moving Image at the University of Sydney.
During his studies, Fergus was instrumental in the production of 'Information Cocoon', 'Interview of SUUFA' and, most notably, The Mantle in which he served as writer, director and lead actor. This highly personal piece would see him pushing himself to new areas creatively and was derived from his own familial experiences.
In the future, Fergus hopes to be able to work in the sound department or camera department as well as the production department.
This documentary is called Dis-Culture. It is actually a wordplay of the words disc and culture. Ultimate Frisbee is a niche sport which helped me a lot throughout these years and as I start to see the rise of Ultimate Frisbee, I wanted to make a documentary to broaden the fans and audience of this sport. The documentary follows my major life events as the main story structure to introduce the sport in different perspectives. I also interviewed some players of the team and see if frisbee does bring the same kind of excitement and belonging to others.
