Director Statement

Dirtbag is an experimental, drama, and horror film that explores a young woman’s addiction to opioids, her friend’s effort to reveal the truth, and the dirty deals that formed her addiction. This film links three different timelines lit by three symbolic colors: green, blue, and orange. These effects were created using lighting gels and the entire film was shot digitally and edited in Premiere Pro. The lighting and settings will clue viewers into piecing together Cara’s story and by the end of the film, the storylines will culminate in the last “dirty deal” shot between the businessman and doctor. The topic of addiction is very complicated and sensitive, thus this film touches on it with symbolism and sensitivity while also showing the nuanced process of how an American like Cara can “be playing volleyball, break her leg, and end in rehab.”
