Director Biography - Jonathan Samukange

Jonathan Samukange is a new filmmaker straight out of Hollywood, with a BFA in Film making from the New York Film Academy. His ambition is to shine a light of African stories and present them on a global stage in a way anyone can relate.

Director Statement

The story Honest comes from a special place in my heart, it is a metaphoric representation of my own life. A young man who will do anything to make his mark in the world, or sometimes to just live well. I feel this is a global problem all of us have, how do we shine our light and move others with it.

My relationship with my father is a huge influence on the story, it's the typical African patriarch. On the other side of the coin I wanted to explore what would happen if you went for your dreams, but through corrupt means.

I've always filmed outside of Africa, to be able to come back home and capture the people of Zimbabwe was a great achievement. We are the pioneers of cinema in Zimbabwe, this is the beginning of our story.
