Director Biography - Steve Cooke

After 33 years as a police officer, it was time for a change. Dealing with the traumatic impacts of exposure to horrific incidents it was time for new career and I pursued something that I'd always been passionate about.

I started filming a documentary locally, focusing on a National Park (Namadgi), the history, and the modern day users. The title of the documentary is 'Finding the Namadgi Trail'. This is in recognition of the many modern day park users, who are perhaps following the same ancient and traditional trails as the Ngunnawal and Ngarigo (and others) people as they made their way into the mountains for ceremony, hunting and seasonal gathering.

My first film, Letter from Bobeyan, is the first of a series and following it's success, I've branched out into other genres. Our first feature length story was The Blacksmith, combining two time periods 180 years apart.

I love story telling and the journey that takes you from that very first idea, to writing, developing and finalising a script. Even more satisfying is when that script becomes a film, the ultimate achievement for any writer.

Director Statement

As a film maker, you are constantly looking for ways to challenge yourself. This was the first time I'd made a film that was written by someone else. From adapting the story, to raising funds and of course, making this film a reality is something I'll never forget.

This was a real community effort, from the fundraising to the cast and crew who were involved. Living in Canberra, we have beautiful heritage buildings and these made it possible to re-produce the 1940's time period that was an integral part of this story.
