Dead & Gone (song)
Dead and Gone
I taste the dirt of the road leading to you
I’ve come here looking to speak words of truth
The heat of the sun burns my skin as I quicken my pace
With clinched fists and tears, I find your resting place
It’s there in that moment I do the only thing I know to do
I stand over your grave and scream these words at you
It’s a good thing you’re dead and gone
Because if you weren’t, I would have killed you on my own
She was just a child carrying your DNA
But that didn’t stop you from doing what you did anyway
She carried her secrets, very few knew
And it was only after she had been laid to rest
That I learned her truth
Today I came to visit, I had so much to say
But as I stood over the spot where you now lay
All I could do was scream, scream these words at you
It’s a good thing you’re dead and gone
Because if you weren’t, I would have killed you on my own
Now you might think this is where the story ends
But when I found out what had been done to her
I also found out about your mother’s sins
You were just a child carrying her DNA
But that didn’t stop her from doing what she did anyway
You carried your secrets all those years
Putting up fronts, hiding your tears
And even though you loved the only way you knew
You were never able to escape the demons living inside of you
And as I thought about that little boy and what he must have went through
I found myself at your mother’s grave
Screaming the same words I had screamed at you
It’s a good thing you’re dead and gone
Because if you weren’t, I would have killed you on my own
And as I turn and slowly walk away
The wind carries with it what I came here to say
It’s a good thing you’re dead and gone
Because if you weren’t, I would have killed you on my own
Yeah, it’s a good thing you’re dead and gone
Because if you weren’t, I would have killed you on my own

I am a 58 year old wife, mother, and grandmother. This was my very first attempt at writing and singing. My favorite song writer Travis Meadows says you write what you know. That is what I did on this song. I did a hard thing.
Sometimes we have to face down our demons. This song is about that very thing.
