Director Statement

Our goal with Dead Drunk was to create an homage to the horror-comedy genre, with Sam Raimi's
Evil Dead trilogy being a particularly strong influence on our film; the first-person possession scene in
particular is a direct tribute to the “demon vision” sequences in all three Evil Dead films. The dialogue
and performances are heightened to achieve a suitably over-the-top tone, which is supported by the
vibrant lighting and overpowering music. We did not, however, want to create a purely onedimensional
experience, instead opting to inject elements of addiction and negative coping mechanisms
into our film. The protagonist, Jake, has lost control of his life and has turned to alcohol and partying as
a way to distract himself from his problems, which only sends him further into a downward spiral.
While these story elements were much more prominent in the original script, they are still present in the
subtext of the film. We chose to make the opening scene, depicting Jake's ordinary world, visually
contrast with the colourful world of the party by desaturating the image to create a grey, muted colour
scheme.
