Dawson Island, a Song in the Adversity
Following the coup d'état in Chile in 1973, three young supporters of the political project of the overthrown president Salvador Allende are taken prisoner and brutally tortured by the military government of Pinochet. In the concentration camp of Isla Dawson, a remote place in Chilean Patagonia, they begin the creation of the Cantata Nuestra Madre Grande. The composition of this musical piece will accompany them throughout their imprisonment until they finally leave prison for exile in 1976. After 50 years, its premiere will take place in the southern city of Punta Arenas. The musical piece will be performed by a choir of young students from the University of Magallanes, young people of the same age as the authors in the dark years of repression in Chile in the 1970s.
