Born and raised in Michigan, writer/director D. R. Tibbits (Darren Robert Tibbits) cut his filmmaking teeth in Chicago, and is now based in Minnesota. Since 2006, Darren has rooted himself in the true independent spirit, striving to tell absurdly plausible stories of mankind. He creates visceral stories which provoke and evoke beyond simple entertainment. His character development often breaks convention by using the wit of the modern, intelligent audience as a “fourth wall” of story evolution.
Darren’s early short films have played to audience acclaim at festivals throughout North America. His latest short film PINEBOX (2018) has won 5 awards including Best of Fest at the 2018 Show Low Film Festival. INVENTION (2006) played on regional PBS broadcast and is archived in the Walker Art Center’s Media Library. His short scripts have won the Nashville Film Festival Screenwriting Competition and placed as finalists in both the PAGE International Screenwriting Awards and BlueCat Screenplay Competition, including PINEBOX. He's currently developing two features and a limited series.
