Director Bailin Yan hails from Changchun City, Jilin Province, China. At 18, she entered the Film Academy of Communication University of Zhejiang. Presently, she is pursuing an MFA in Editing at Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, Chapman University. For her undergraduate thesis project, she served as the director, screenwriter, and editor, shooting her debut short film, “Dance, Dance Man and Woman”. During her undergraduate years, she amassed extensive film - making experience at the Film Academy. As an editor, she worked on the short film, “Say goodbye to the crowded paradise”, which was shortlisted for the 46th Moscow International Film Festival, the finals of the 54th American Film Festival, and several other international film festivals. The director is dedicated to filming female - themed stories from a male perspective, aiming to break the gender - role stereotypes in traditional narratives. Currently, she is in the process of preparing for the shooting of her second female - themed work.
The "male gaze" is an important and inescapable topic in today's society. When I was walking on the stairs at school and became the object of being secretly photographed under my skirt and being stared at, I firmly established a strong idea of filming related female - centered stories. I turned to a teacher I usually trusted for help, but what I got were vulgar remarks, with the teacher thinking that my behavior was "indecent". This is the motivation behind my creation of this story.
The title of the film, "Dance, Dance Man and Woman", directly points to dancing, but the deeper - level theme is the awakening of female consciousness. When a "female ghost" influenced by the ideology of the 1980s faces a future where "form prevails over content" and continuous repeating tragedies, does she have the courage to rebel against the "patriarchy" that binds her? The character An Guolin is the epitome of the teacher I asked for help, and also represents many men in society.
