My name is Shoneel Yallattikar & I'm a 31 y/o independent writer, director, producer working in Mumbai, India. Since the age of 18, I have been passionately directing short films, music videos, advertisements, corporate films, and small documentaries. I have been an assistant & associate director on five feature films, an editor on more than eight projects and have directed my 7 episode (3hour long) web-show that's currently in the acquisition stage.
My journey began with producing short films for my personal storytelling ambitions, and I started developing appreciation for the entire production process. From then on, I was both producer and director. And yet, I'd still call myself a director first, followed by writer, and lastly, as a producer.
Having worked on all the sides, I realized that many financial practices, hierarchies, disorganized contracts, and systematic biases are harming the creative environment on sets. And a set manned by an overworked and dissatisfied crew is also costing the production a lot.
I decided to experiment with my new systems on set while producing my first long-format project, Duet (210 minutes, 7 episodes). With minor structural adjustments and interdepartmental relationship management, we could wrap this in 17 days within the budget of $125,000, without compromising on quality. This was a far better budget outcome than many features happening in my local language at the time.
This was the farthest I could push my experiments in my capacity, but now I wish to refine my ideas and scale my production house toward my dream of putting my culture and stories on an international scale. I determine to create compelling stories with cross-language collaborations, elevating my industry to achieve a pedestal similar to what the Korean and Spanish industries have created for themselves.
We are lucky to live in the time where we have platforms like FilmFreeway where we can connect and reach our stories out the festivals and competitions all over the globe.
I earnestly believe that humanity always wins and it's the sensitive and sensible people around the world who will be helping me realize my dreams.
