DOOMER

Doomer is a short film stylised to look like a screen-recorded internet deep dive. It follows a futuristic disjointed story of a viewer as they ponder the meaning of life and their bodily and mental limitations in the age of the technological super-advancement through the consumption of online content.

As the viewer delves deeper; trying to find solace in spirituality, philosophy and pleasure, the lines between the online and real world blur together, reflecting our contemporary liquidation of realities. This film's confessional and humoristic writing was inspired by the works of David Foster Wallace of the New Sincerity movement and the digital poetry of Yehwan Song.

Inspired by the paradox of “Personal is universal” this short film is inspired by my struggles with depression, lack of direction in life, thoughts on ever-accelerating technological progress, online life and how those things are interconnected.

The Femmexy persona appearing was inspired by the DIY zany aesthetics of the internet culture. It was realised from my observations of how separated our digital personalities are from the real-world ones, creating almost entirely new facets of self. This character was designed to be an expression of the digital personality come to life. The mask and drag elements are symbolic of the self-creation possibilities the internet provides.
