Jiakai Lu is a filmmaker and storyteller specialising in screenwriting, directing, editing, and sound design.
Jiakai, being of Hakka descent, was born and raised in Guangzhou, China. He embarked on his academic journey in Canada and the UK, which fostered a deep interest in exploring the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western cultures.
Jiakai pursued his passion for film by studying film studies as an undergraduate and film production as a postgraduate. Gifted in both screenwriting and directing, he is dedicated to mastering the art of cinematic storytelling.
Jiakai's love for literature, music, philosophy, and film has fuelled his creative drive. He draws inspiration from diverse sources, including culture, history, philosophy, and, most importantly, his life experiences. His creative vision is centred on exploring the intricacies of interpersonal relationships, particularly those shaped by profound emotional connections such as familial bonds.
Jiakai's works are characterised by meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to the craft of storytelling. He utilises film language to convey the complexities of the human experience, skilfully intertwining visual and narrative elements to create intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant works.
Simone de Beauvoir's 'The Second Sex' inspired me to explore a woman's struggle to break away from her emotional bonds.
Additionally, I am fascinated by the dynamics of the mother-son relationship. I fused these ideas to create a poignant short film that captures a mother's emotional journey towards her son's inevitable independence.
